A single helping can supply half the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, according to its developers at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. The genes also give it its distinctive golden hue.<\/p>\n<p>The nod by the FDA makes the US the fourth country to approve the rice this year, behind Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Having the rice cleared in these countries means there would be no regulatory issues if they imported food containing small quantities of the rice.<\/p>\n<p>But its developer says the most important approvals are still awaited in the Philippines and Bangladesh, where the rice could have the greatest impact.
