The afternoon kicked off with a warm welcome from Remco Hermans, board member of the Dutch Biotechnology Association (NBV), who highlighted the value of bringing together people from every corner of the biotech ecosystem – all needed to translate biotech innovation into societal impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Building on that message, hollandbio’s Wieteke set the scene by outlining the opportunities and challenges Dutch biotech faces. Around the world, governments and investors increasingly recognise biotech as a strategic technology capable of addressing major societal challenges, from healthcare and food security to sustainability and circularity. At the same time, international competition is intensifying, with the United States and China investing heavily to strengthen their biotech ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wieteke emphasised that biotech innovation depends on a strong and connected ecosystem. An ecosystem, after all, is only as strong as its weakest link. While important progress has been made in recent years, including improvements in GMO permitting procedures and the adoption of new genomic techniques legislation, significant challenges remain. Financing continues to be on top of the list for companies looking to scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scale-up challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Next on stage was Willemijn van der Elst, Investment Manager Agrifood at Invest-NL. She offered the audience an early glimpse into Invest-NL’s ongoing biotech deep dives, which are helping shape the organisation’s future ambitions and strategy for strengthening the Dutch biotech ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Willemijn, the Netherlands has all the ingredients to become a leading biotech hub, including strong science, innovative companies and growing political momentum. Yet scaling innovative companies remains challenging. Across biotech applications, Invest-NL identified five recurring bottlenecks: financing, infrastructure, market adoption, regulation and coordination across value chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drawing on findings from the agrifood deep dive, she explained that reaching commercial scale ultimately requires companies to secure production capacity, build teams with the right expertise and find their first customers. Unlocking the sector’s full economic and societal potential therefore requires action from everyone involved. Governments, investors, companies, ecosystem partners and customers each have a role to play in creating the conditions for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From scientific breakthrough to successful business<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Providing the private investor perspective was Guillaume Baxter, Partner at Sofinnova. He reflected on the evolution of industrial biotech over the past decade. The good news, he noted, is that the technology is increasingly mature, talent pools are growing and markets are actively looking for future-proof solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His key message to entrepreneurs was straightforward: scale should be earned, not assumed. Companies must demonstrate they can manufacture at scale, build experienced teams, develop a compelling value proposition and establish a clear route to profitability. Because ultimately, customers only buy products when they are better, cheaper or solve a real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Built in Europe, sold abroad… and now coming home?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The entrepreneurial perspective came from Ferdinand Los, CEO of Hudson River Biotechnology. Through the story of his company, he illustrated how funding, regulation and market development come together in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the company is based in the Netherlands, much of its early commercial success came from markets outside Europe. Because genome editing was effectively not an option in the EU, the company was forced to pursue opportunities abroad, while raising capital became increasingly challenging due to the lack of a viable regulatory pathway and limited investor confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The recent adoption of the EU\u2019s Regulation on new genomic techniques (NGT\u2019s) is already changing the picture. As Ferdinand put it, the company received more enquiries from European customers in the past four months than in the previous four years combined. This surge in interest shows the potential impact of the NGT Regulation. However, its ultimate success will depend on how the framework is translated into workable rules over the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nevertheless, regulation alone will not be enough. Europe also needs stronger value-chain collaboration and greater access to growth capital if it wants to remain competitive in the global biotech race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We need bold moves to make progress<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The event concluded with an interactive panel discussion featuring Willemijn, Guillaume and Ferdinand, moderated by Wieteke. Topics ranged from AI and talent development to regulation, public acceptance and Europe’s competitiveness in an increasingly global biotech landscape. Although perspectives differed, the speakers largely agreed on three things: Europe has the scientific foundations to succeed, regulation and financing need to better support innovators as they scale, and collaboration across the value chain will be essential to bring biotech solutions to market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the discussion also carried a clear warning: Europe cannot afford to continue at its current pace. As Guillaume put it: \u201cIf we do not act decisively now, Europe risks being left with little more than a future built on tourism and services. The foundations are there, but scientific excellence and ambitious strategies will mean little unless they are followed by bold decisions and rapid, coordinated action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The energy in the room showed that the Dutch biotech ecosystem is ready to play its part. Conversations continued long after the formal program ended, with attendees exchanging ideas, making new connections and exploring opportunities for collaboration. That willingness to work together remains one of the Dutch biotech sector\u2019s greatest strengths. Now, the growing pressure to improve Europe\u2019s competitiveness must create the momentum to break through old barriers, make bold moves and turn ambition into action.
