Maar hoe houd je koers als de risico\u2019s groot zijn, de financiering onzeker is en de ontwikkeling jaren duurt?&nbsp; We spraken Michael Newton, CEO van Qorium, over hoe hij de overstap maakte van de wereld van Wall Street en Nike naar tissue engineering en gekweekt leer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newton groeide op in New York City en begon zijn carri\u00e8re op Wall Street. Na jaren in venture capital, private equity wilde hij meer meemaken van ondernemen, of zoals Michael het zelf zegt: \u201cget my hands dirty and play an active role in helping businesses operate and grow.\u201dMichael kwam uiteindelijk terecht bij Nike, waar hij zich dertien jaar bezighield met innovatie, supply chain en digitale productontwikkeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorking at Nike often felt like running a series of start-ups inside one of the world\u2019s biggest brands,\u201d zegt hij. Hij werkte onder meer aan nieuwe fabrieken in China, Sri Lanka en Mexico en hielp het Nike Innovation-team om te groeien van een team van twee personen (waaronder hijzelf) naar ongeveer 500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toch begon het na verloop van tijd weer te kriebelen. Samen met zijn vrouw verhuisde hij naar Europa en kwam hij via een oude kennis in contact met Qorium, toen nog op zoek naar een CEO om het bedrijf te helpen groeien: \u201cWhat Qorium is building felt too important &#8211; and too exciting &#8211; to miss.\u201d Voor hem kwam alles samen in het bedrijf: cutting-edge technologie, een gigantische bestaande markt en de kans om daadwerkelijk duurzame impact te maken. Qorium ontwikkelt gekweekt leer op basis van tissue engineering, waarmee het een alternatief wil bieden voor traditioneel leer, zonder de milieu-impact van de veeteelt en zonder concessies te doen aan kwaliteit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor Newton was dat direct interessant. \u201cWhat we create isn\u2019t a leather alternative. It\u2019s real leather,\u201d legt hij uit. Volgens hem onderscheidt Qorium zich doordat het materiaal niet alleen duurzamer is, maar ook voordelen biedt voor producenten. \u201cTraditional leather is inherently variable, with scars, defects and significant waste. Our process allows us to create a uniform and more premium material.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoewel Qorium zich richt op leer, ziet Newton de technologie daarachter als veel breder toepasbaar. \u201cAt its core, we\u2019re building a tissue engineering platform,\u201d zegt hij. \u201cThe implications of that reach far beyond leather, and are far more relevant to the biotech sector than many people initially assume.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De overstap van een multinational als Nike naar een jonge biotechonderneming was wel even schakelen. \u201cAt Nike, my marketing budget alone was larger than Qorium\u2019s entire budget,\u201d lacht hij. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I can be talking to investors one hour and helping assemble desks the next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toch ziet hij juist daarin de kracht van een start-up. \u201cYou can move quickly and make decisions fast. Of course you make mistakes, but most decisions are reversible.\u201d Volgens Newton helpt zijn ervaring bij grote corporates juist om Qorium sneller te laten groeien. \u201cI understand how big companies think and what they need from emerging technology partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ook over Nederland heeft Newton duidelijke idee\u00ebn. Zo ziet hij nog veel onbenut potentieel: \u201cSometimes there\u2019s a reluctance to take risks, and a tendency to settle too quickly for \u2018good enough\u2019.\u201d Toch is hij enthousiast over het hoge opleidingsniveau, de infrastructuur en het biotech-ecosysteem: \u201cThe Netherlands has all the ingredients to become a global leader&#8221;. Vooral de regio Maastricht noemt hij een ideale plek voor biotechbedrijven: \u201cThere\u2019s a genuine ecosystem emerging here, where companies, research institutions and government strengthen one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor jonge ondernemers heeft hij vooral \u00e9\u00e9n advies: durf om hulp te vragen. \u201cThe greatest superpower an entrepreneur can have is asking for help.
