Vraag biotech ondernemers naar hun grootste uitdaging, en de kans is groot dat het antwoord \u2018financiering\u2019 is. De weg die biotech innovaties afleggen van lab naar maatschappij is lang, vol risico\u2019s en extreem kostbaar. Een passend financieringsaanbod voor elke fase van bedrijfs- en productontwikkeling is dan ook een belangrijke randvoorwaarde om de potentie van biotech voor gezondheid, verduurzaming en onze economie ten volle te benutten. Maar hoe is het gesteld met het Nederlandse financieringsaanbod voor biotech innovatie? Hollandbio zoekt het uit. Na de Regionale Investerings Maatschappijen (ROMs)<\/a>, nu in deel 2 van deze serie: Invest-NL. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invest-NL is een groot investeringsfonds dat is opgezet vanuit de Nederlandse overheid. Met een fondsvermogen van \u20ac2.5 miljard heeft Invest-NL de ambitie om financierbaar te maken wat niet financierbaar lijkt. Een impactinvesteerder die bovendien inzet op innovatie en verduurzaming en die nog risico\u2019s durft te nemen ook, dat klinkt als een perfecte match met biotech. Maar is dat ook zo? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hollandbio dook in het portfolio en de plannen van Invest-NL en zette de cijfers op een rij. Van de 44 directe investeringen, ter waarde van in totaal ~\u20ac250 miljoen, investeerde Invest-NL tweemaal in biotech. Van een totaal van 19 debt financieringen (~\u20ac168 mln) gingen er drie naar biotechbedrijven. Directe investeringen in specifiek medische biotech zien we helemaal niet \u2013 afgezien van \u00e9\u00e9n toegekend corona-overbruggingskrediet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naast directe investeringen injecteerde Invest-NL maar liefst ~\u20ac420 miljoen in zogeheten fund-to-fund constructies. Samen met het European Investment Fund (EIF) richtte Invest-NL het Dutch Alternative Credit Initiative (\u20ac 50 mln) en het Dutch Future Fund I en II op. Deze laatste twee fondsen vullen op hun beurt diverse private Nederlandse fondsen, waarvan sommige actief zijn in Life Sciences. Zo stopte het Dutch Future Fund I<\/a> in totaal \u20ac40 mln in Life Sciences fondsen. Het is daarbij opmerkelijk dat Invest-NL in ruil voor dat geld geen zeggenschap over de besteding vraagt \u2013 ze kopen een stoel in de bus, maar hebben geen handen aan het stuur. De Life Sciences fondsen kunnen daardoor in principe in Life Sciences bedrijven waar dan ook ter wereld investeren, maar gelukkig kozen ze er een aantal keer voor om te investeren in biotech bedrijven van eigen bodem. Voor het Dutch Future Fund II (\u20ac150 mln) is biotech expliciet uitgesloten. Waarom is hollandbio, ook na gesprekken met Invest-NL, niet geheel duidelijk.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kortom: op papier zijn biotech en Invest-NL een perfecte match, maar in de praktijk valt er nog een wereld te winnen. Juist in de grote transities op het gebied van verduurzaming en gezondheid biedt biotech volop kansen, maar ontbreekt passend en geduldig kapitaal. Invest-NL heeft de potentie om biotech bedrijven in elke fase \u00e9n over de volle breedte wind mee te geven, en daarmee de aanjager zijn die Nederland zo hard nodig heeft om de excellente kennispositie te verzilveren in bedrijvigheid, producten en diensten met maatschappelijke \u00e9n economische impact. Invest-NL als hof-financier van de biorevolutie \u2013 wij zien het wel zitten!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
