Deze eenmalige gentherapie is ontworpen om de hoofdoorzaak van spinale spieratrofie (SMA) \u2013 een mutatie in het SMN1-gen \u2013 aan te pakken. De therapie wordt eenmalig toegediend tijdens een intraveneus infuus waarbij een werkend kopie van het SMN1-gen wordt afgegeven aan de cellen van een pati\u00ebnt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De overeenkomst is goed nieuws voor Nederlandse pati\u00ebnten met SMA. Deze eenmalige gentherapie kan uitkomst bieden aan pati\u00ebnten met symptomatische SMA type 1 en presymptomatische pati\u00ebnten met twee of drie kopie\u00ebn van het SMN2-gen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Country Manager Benelux van Novartis Gene Therapies, Karel Fol: \u201c<em>Wij zijn erg blij dat SMA-pati\u00ebnten in Nederland toegang krijgen tot deze eenmalige behandeling. Gezien de hoge medische nood is samen met de autoriteiten en andere belanghebbenden hard gewerkt om zo snel mogelijk een overeenkomst te sluiten. De snelheid waarmee dit gerealiseerd is, is dan ook vooral een mooie uitkomst voor de pati\u00ebnten die het zo hard nodig hebben.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spinale spieratrofie (SMA) is een zeldzame en ernstige genetische aandoening die leidt tot toenemende spierzwakte, verlamming en, wanneer het in de ernstigste vorm niet wordt behandeld, permanente beademing of overlijden.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><sup>,<\/sup><a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> SMA is de voornaamste genetische oorzaak van kindersterfte en wordt veroorzaakt door een gebrek aan een functioneel SMN1-gen, dat leidt tot een progressief en onomkeerbaar verlies van motorische neuronen, waardoor de motorische functies, zoals zitten, kruipen of lopen, maar ook ademhalen en slikken worden aangetast. <a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><sup>,<\/sup><a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovatieve behandelingen, zoals cel- en gentherapie\u00ebn, zorgen ervoor dat pati\u00ebnten steeds sneller en gerichter kunnen worden behandeld en mogelijk een betere kwaliteit van leven hebben.
