Vandaag verwelkomen we Orchard Therapeutics in ons midden! Orchard is een voorloper in het toepassen van gentherapie voor erfelijke ziekten. Het bedrijf is opgericht in 2015 in London, en bouwt voort op een lange onderzoekshistorie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orchard richt ook graag een woord tot de lezer: &#8220;Wij maken gebruik van de eigen hemapoetische stamcellen (HSC) van pati\u00ebnten. De stamcellen worden bij de pati\u00ebnt afgenomen, genetisch aangepast en daarna weer aan dezelfde pati\u00ebnt toegediend. De stamcellen zullen zich weer hechten in het beenmerg, om zich vervolgens blijvend te vermenigvuldigen en differenti\u00ebren in alle typen bloed en immuuncellen. Deze genetisch aangepaste cellen komen overall in het lichaam en passeren bijvoorbeeld ook de bloed hersenbarri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wij richten ons op de behandeling van immunologische, neurometabole en neurodegeneratieve ziekten, waarbij we verwachten dat een eenmalige behandeling volstaat. Deze methode is succesvol toegepast bij een vorm van ernstig gecombineerde immuundefici\u00ebntie als gevolg van adenosinedeaminasedefici\u00ebntie (ADA-SCID). Eind 2019 is het registratiedossier ingediend bij de EMA voor de behandeling van Metachtromatische Leukodystrofie. Een zeer zeldzame erfelijke stofwisselingsziekte, waarbij onder andere de hersenfunctie ernstig wordt aangetast. Orchard heeft behandelingen voor meerdere andere ziekten in klinisch en preklinisch onderzoek. In de verschillende programma\u2019s zijn inmiddels meer dan 170 pati\u00ebnten behandeld met HSC gentherapie.
