To solve this problem, a medical device was developed\nthat enables a patient\u2019s body to create blood vessels using the patient\u2019s own\ncells. Vacis, the company commercializing this technology, has successfully\nclosed a further funding round to set up GMP production, execute clinical\ntrials and obtain CE certification.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ncompany received funding from Netherlands-based Brightlands Venture Partners\nand LIOF through their Limburg Business Development Fund (LBDF), as well as the\nGerman High-Tech Gr\u00fcnderfonds (HTGF). This was supplemented with a so-called\nInnovation Credit from RVO (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency). \u201cThe financing\nand support of the investors will enable us to quickly scale up the clinical\ntrial and accelerate the route to market by at least a year\u201d, says Ken Messier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVacis\ncombines elegant science with a solid management team. Brightlands truly is the\necosystem in which Vacis can validate its technology in patients and go to\nmarket fast.\u201d, says Casper Bruens &#8211; Director at Brightlands Venture Partners.\nTys van Elk, Director at LIOF adds: \u201cVacis is an exciting addition to the local\ncommunity of regenerative medicine and realizing this consortium fits perfectly\nwith LIOF\u2019s increasing cross border ambition in the Euregio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nmedical device is a synthetic rod with a specialized surface that is inserted\nunder the skin. This induces the body to form a tissue capsule, which in the\nright environment, further matures into a functional blood vessel that is used\nas a vascular access site for hemodialysis. \u201cWe found the simplicity of the\nsolution and the biocompatibility data very convincing and are delighted to\nsupport Vacis\u201d adds Anke Cassing, Investment Manager at HTGF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team\nhas been expanded with two seasoned biotech managers, Ken Messier and Josephine\nBrackman. Ken brings a wealth of clinical development and regulatory expertise,\nwith over 30 years\u2019 experience in Biotech. He has held various Director and Sr.\nProgram Management positions within biotech companies such as Genzyme and DSM\nBiomedical. Josephine brings a broad expertise that covers (project) management,\nintellectual property and R&amp;D. She has over 25 years\u2019 experience in\nmaterials and biotech and has held several senior positions within DSM. They\nboth join Dominik Klump, the Chief Technology Officer of Vacis, in the\nmanagement team at the location in Geleen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leiden University Medical Center and Maastricht University played a key role in the development of the technology.
