The EIB\u2019s financing is supported under the \u201cInfectious\nDiseases Finance Facility\u201d (IDFF) of the <em>InnovFin\n<\/em><em>\u2013<\/em><em> EU-finance for innovators <\/em>programme, which\nis financed from the EU\u2019s research and\ninnovation programme Horizon 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persistent HPV16\ninfection can cause cervical, head &amp; neck and anogenital cancers. These\ncancers can be severe and life-threatening, with low overall survival rates of\nadvanced stages. Cervical cancer is the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> most common cancer in\nwomen aged 15 to 44 years in Europe, with HPV16 causing over 35,000 new cases\nand 15,000 deaths each year. The virus is also a major cause of oropharyngeal\ncancer with over 25,000 new cases and 12,000 deaths each year in Europe alone<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISA\nPharmaceuticals has developed a novel therapy, ISA101b, which targets\nHPV16-positive cancers through the specific activation of the patient\u2019s own\nimmune system. The treatment has proven to be safe with no serious side\neffects, and has demonstrated substantial benefit for patients, when used in\naddition to current treatment in advanced stages of the head &amp; neck cancer\nand cervical cancer. ISA101b represents a unique and innovative treatment\nmodality. It is designed to fight HPV16 driven premalignant conditions and\nearly stage cancers as monotherapy, and metastatic malignancies when given\ntogether with standard of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cISA&#8217;s lead product is at a very exciting final\nstage of development. This loan from the EIB will help accelerate the programme\nall the way to our ultimate goal of making ISA101b available to all patients\nsuffering from HPV16-induced cancers,\u201d <strong>said Gerben Moolhuizen<\/strong>, <strong>CEO of\nISA Pharmaceuticals<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am very\npleased that we can actively contribute to combating cancer and its causes as a\nfinancial institution, thanks to the support of the European Commission\u2019s\nInnovFin programme. After financing projects for research into the Zika virus\nand Ebola vaccines, this human papillomavirus project is one that we gladly\nparticipate in.
