For the first time, Malta and Latvia have joined the\ninitiative to celebrate the benefits of biotech with local communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From\nresearchers and professionals to curious students, across all age groups &#8211;\nevents throughout the week were diverse, innovative and, first and foremost,\neducational. They\u2019ve included conferences, workshops, hands on laboratories,\nexhibitions and open-door days with companies, research institutes and museums\n\u2013 EuropaBio thanks all organisers for their impressive efforts in creating a\nEuropean-wide buzz for biotech!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Brussels, EuropaBio hosted multiple events around the benefits of\nbiotech for people and planet. The kick-off day saw many students, researchers\nand representatives of industry and the European institutions coming together\nfor discussions and presentations, beginning on Monday with a \u2018biotech\ninspired\u2019 lunch and ending the same day with a lively biotechnology pub quiz!\nOther events included a fruitful discussion around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.investinthefutureofhealthbiotech.splashthat.com\">the financing ecosystem for healthcare biotech<\/a>\nin Europe, and the need to remain competitive with the rest of the world. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genomeediting_thenewfrontier.splashthat.com\/\">This year\u2019s main event<\/a> \u2013 a lunch, co-hosted by MEP Henna Virkkunen\nand MEP Anthea McIntyre, took place in the European Parliament and showcased\nperspectives from industry, end-users, patients and researchers on the new\nfrontier in biotech innovation: Genome Editing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EuropaBio Secretary General, Joanna Dupont-Inglis highlights: <em>\u2018Thanks to the discovery of new gene-editing technologies, we now have the ability to edit genes with greater precision, accuracy and speed than ever before. As a result, Biotech now has the potential to contribute so much more, transforming patients\u2019 lives by treating unmet medical needs, mitigating the impacts of climate change and saving scarce resources for a growing global population. But the technology has developed much faster than the debate both publicly and politically. The many events around this topic during the European Biotech Week helped to include a wider spectrum of stakeholders, policymakers and civil society in these important discussions.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, for the first time, European Biotech Week included a\n#BiotechFan film competition. The winners, Anna, Giulio and Francesco from the\nUniversity of Padua and Enzo from the Technical University Munich, took part in\nthree days of back-to-back biotech events in Brussels presenting their ideas,\ninspiration and aspirations to decision-makers, researchers and industry\nrepresentatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EuropaBio Chairman and former CEO of Corbion, Tjerk de Ruiter,\nconcluded: \u2018<em>European Biotech Week provides the perfect opportunity to\nreflect on how far we\u2019ve come and how far we need to go.
