BunyaVax is\ntechnology provider in a consortium led by Wageningen Bioveterinary Research\nand financed by CEPI to develop a human vaccine against Rift Valley Fever. With\nsupport from the European Union\u2019s (EU\u2019s) Horizon 2020 programme, CEPI will\nprovide up to US$12.5 million for vaccine manufacturing, preclinical research,\nand a phase 1 study to assess the safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity of a\nsingle-dose vaccine candidate (RVFV-4s) against Rift Valley fever virus for use\nin humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To produce\nthis vaccine candidate, researchers at WBVR have altered the genome of the Rift\nValley fever virus in a way that significantly weakens it. BunyaVax as a spin-off\ncompany from WBVR owns the underlying technology and further develops the\nvaccine towards application. The \u201cattenuated\u201d Rift Valley fever virus will now\nbe used as a vaccine to generate a lasting immune response against the disease.\nThis investment is part of CEPI\u2019s third call for proposals, launched earlier\nthis year with support from the EU\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation\nprogramme under grant agreement No. 857934.[1]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rift Valley fever<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rift Valley\nfever vaccines have already been used successfully to protect livestock, but\ncurrently none have been licensed for use in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rift Valley\nfever virus mainly affects people living in pastoral communities in low-income\nand middle-income countries.[2]<\/a>\nWhile the virus mostly infects humans through contact with the blood or organs\nof infected animals, there is a concern that it could also be transmitted from\nhuman-to-human by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which could change its epidemiology\nconsiderably.[3]<\/a> In\nview of the epidemic threat posed by this disease, the WHO has classified it as\na priority pathogen in need of urgent R&D investment.[4]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rift Valley\nfever kills about one in every hundred people infected. In people who develop the\nhaemorrhagic form of the disease, the fatality rate is as high as 50%.[5]<\/a>,[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The virus\nwas first identified in 1931 during an investigation into an outbreak among\nsheep on a farm in the Rift Valley of Kenya. Multiple outbreaks have since been\nreported across the African continent and on the Arabian Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between May\nand June, 2018, concurrent cases of Rift Valley fever were reported in farmers\nin South Africa and Kenya, nearly 5000 km apart.[7]<\/a>,[8]<\/a><\/sup>\nThere is also an ongoing outbreak on the island of Mayotte, a French overseas\nterritory in the Indian Ocean. As of May 13, 2019, 129 human and 109 animal\ncases of Rift Valley fever have been confirmed on the island.[9]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof.\nJeroen Kortekaas, project lead and molecular virologist at WBVR, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith this\nstrategic collaboration, CEPI acknowledges the concept of One Health, by\nbringing together veterinary and public health experts to fight an emerging\nvirus that affects both animals and humans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
