This is a novel contrast agent for use in MRI, developed for the (early) detection of lymph node metastases of prostate cancer. Ferrotran<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is the only contrast agent that can detect lymph node metastases as small as 2 mm. Standard MRI or CT are normally not able to detect nodes smaller than 7-8 mm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinical trial will be\nperformed in 10 top radiology centers in Germany, Switzerland and the\nNetherlands, and a total of 180 patients with prostatic cancer will be selected\nfor the trial. The first patient will be enrolled as soon as the ethics\ncommittee has approved the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ferrotran was recently\napproved in Switzerland for compassionate use (Sonderbewilligung) in the\ndiagnosis of detection of lymph node metastases of prostate cancer patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According\nto Professor Bernd Hamm, the principal investigator of this trial and Head of\nthe Dept of Radiology of the famous Charit\u00e9 hospital in Berlin, the outcome of\nthis trial will give new insights into the value of Ferrotran in the (early)\ndetection of lymph node metastasis from prostate cancer. Better detection or\nexclusion of lymphatic cancer spread markedly affects treatment decisions and will\nimprove outcome for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development of Ferrotran was accelerated when\nProf. Jelle Barentsz, Chairman of\nthe Prostate\nMRI Expert Center of the Radboud\nuniversity medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, further explored the\nunique features of Ferrotran for the early detection of lymph node metastases\nwhen he used it as contrast agent for his prostate cancer patients.
