Pepscan doubles GMP production capacity to facilitate clients’ growth

Pepscan’s GMP production capacity has doubled. Pepscan is an all-in-one partner in peptides, building on 25 years of experience in advancing and applying peptide expertise to facilitate clients in the development and production of peptides. The doubled GMP production capacity enables Pepscan to guarantee short production timelines. It also gives clients the benefit of collaborating with a single expert partner on the way from R&D to the clinic, resulting in maximum efficiency while also saving time. Specifically, researchers active in personalized peptide medicine, where both timelines and flexibility are key, will benefit from these new developments.

Hans de Backer, CEO of Pepscan, explains the new capacity additions. “Earlier this year, we started producing GMP peptides for clinical studies phases 1 and 2, which made it possible to provide peptides for purposes beyond R&D: directly for the benefit of patients. Our new production line, consisting of a new synthesizer, a preparative HPLC and lyophilizer in our cleanroom, and the strengthened QMS and process documentation that were put in place for this, have proven to facilitate the efficient execution of the process. Using this proven concept, we have now doubled the complete production line.” Current production includes both therapeutic peptide projects as well as personalized peptide medicine projects (e.g. neoantigen vaccines).

“Given our role in the field of personalized medicine, short and reliable delivery times are crucial,” adds Hanne Kho, Chief Operations Officer of Pepscan. “This demands a set of rigorous processes and a certain level of flexibility that we, together with outstanding product quality, are able to deliver. I’m very proud that the recent GMP customer audits that were conducted have confirmed this.”

De Backer continues, “Doubling our GMP production capacity is a major milestone that transforms our newly developed GMP capabilities into a solid pillar of our peptide services portfolio. In the last 25 years, we have built extensive knowledge and a reputation for our expertise in developing and producing peptides, specifically constrained peptides.  I’m glad that we are now able to use this expertise to provide peptides for purposes beyond R&D: directly for the benefit of patients.”

ISA Pharmaceuticals receives EUR 20m loan from European Investment Bank

The European Investment Bank and ISA Pharmaceuticals have signed a EUR 20 million loan agreement to support the development of ISA’s therapy for cancers caused by the Human Papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16). The EIB’s financing is supported under the “Infectious Diseases Finance Facility” (IDFF) of the InnovFin – EU-finance for innovators programme, which is financed from the EU’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020.

Persistent HPV16 infection can cause cervical, head & neck and anogenital cancers. These cancers can be severe and life-threatening, with low overall survival rates of advanced stages. Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in women aged 15 to 44 years in Europe, with HPV16 causing over 35,000 new cases and 15,000 deaths each year. The virus is also a major cause of oropharyngeal cancer with over 25,000 new cases and 12,000 deaths each year in Europe alone1.

ISA Pharmaceuticals has developed a novel therapy, ISA101b, which targets HPV16-positive cancers through the specific activation of the patient’s own immune system. The treatment has proven to be safe with no serious side effects, and has demonstrated substantial benefit for patients, when used in addition to current treatment in advanced stages of the head & neck cancer and cervical cancer. ISA101b represents a unique and innovative treatment modality. It is designed to fight HPV16 driven premalignant conditions and early stage cancers as monotherapy, and metastatic malignancies when given together with standard of care.

“ISA’s lead product is at a very exciting final stage of development. This loan from the EIB will help accelerate the programme all the way to our ultimate goal of making ISA101b available to all patients suffering from HPV16-induced cancers,” said Gerben Moolhuizen, CEO of ISA Pharmaceuticals.

“I am very pleased that we can actively contribute to combating cancer and its causes as a financial institution, thanks to the support of the European Commission’s InnovFin programme. After financing projects for research into the Zika virus and Ebola vaccines, this human papillomavirus project is one that we gladly participate in. The EIB has significantly increased its support for projects related to innovation in the health sector recently, and we see the ISA project as a very promising one with significant potential benefits for many patients.” said Ambroise Fayolle, Vice-President of EIB.

Through the support of IDFF, the EIB can provide stable long-term funding with a flexible repayment and interest structure, limiting the cash outflow from the company and thereby enabling it to focus on investing in innovation and growth.

Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, said: “With more people living longer, cancer rates are increasing everywhere. Europe has 9% of the world’s population but a 23% share of the global cancer burden. This is why we support the development of new drugs to treat life-threatening diseases such as cancer through the EU research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020.”

Vacis raises capital from Brightlands Venture Partners, HTGF, LIOF and RVO

Every year, an estimated 300.000 hemodialysis patients worldwide die as they run out of medical alternatives. One of the main reasons for these deaths is failure of the vascular access site, the blood vessel where blood is removed, filtered and returned to the body during dialysis. To solve this problem, a medical device was developed that enables a patient’s body to create blood vessels using the patient’s own cells. Vacis, the company commercializing this technology, has successfully closed a further funding round to set up GMP production, execute clinical trials and obtain CE certification.

The company received funding from Netherlands-based Brightlands Venture Partners and LIOF through their Limburg Business Development Fund (LBDF), as well as the German High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF). This was supplemented with a so-called Innovation Credit from RVO (the Netherlands Enterprise Agency). “The financing and support of the investors will enable us to quickly scale up the clinical trial and accelerate the route to market by at least a year”, says Ken Messier.

“Vacis combines elegant science with a solid management team. Brightlands truly is the ecosystem in which Vacis can validate its technology in patients and go to market fast.”, says Casper Bruens – Director at Brightlands Venture Partners. Tys van Elk, Director at LIOF adds: “Vacis is an exciting addition to the local community of regenerative medicine and realizing this consortium fits perfectly with LIOF’s increasing cross border ambition in the Euregio.”

The medical device is a synthetic rod with a specialized surface that is inserted under the skin. This induces the body to form a tissue capsule, which in the right environment, further matures into a functional blood vessel that is used as a vascular access site for hemodialysis. “We found the simplicity of the solution and the biocompatibility data very convincing and are delighted to support Vacis” adds Anke Cassing, Investment Manager at HTGF.

The team has been expanded with two seasoned biotech managers, Ken Messier and Josephine Brackman. Ken brings a wealth of clinical development and regulatory expertise, with over 30 years’ experience in Biotech. He has held various Director and Sr. Program Management positions within biotech companies such as Genzyme and DSM Biomedical. Josephine brings a broad expertise that covers (project) management, intellectual property and R&D. She has over 25 years’ experience in materials and biotech and has held several senior positions within DSM. They both join Dominik Klump, the Chief Technology Officer of Vacis, in the management team at the location in Geleen.

Leiden University Medical Center and Maastricht University played a key role in the development of the technology. The project was also supported by The Dutch Kidney Patients Association and the Biomedical Materials Program (BMM), a public-private partnership of leading industrial and academic players and the Dutch government.

De one-two punch van het NKI

,

Curie Capital invests in Allero Therapeutics

Life sciences seed capital fund Curie Capital today announced the closing of a seed investment in Allero Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel immunotherapies. The company has developed a proprietary platform technology, called Specific Oromucosal Immunotherapy (SOMIT), which enables targeted delivery of antigen-specific immunotherapies to the oromucosa (a specialized compartment of the immune system that lines the inside of the mouth). Allero Therapeutics aims to restore immune tolerance for specific target molecules in patients suffering from allergic and autoimmune diseases.

Combined with the recent funding from Swanbridge Capital, Curie Capital’s seed investment will enable Allero Therapeutics to prepare its lead product for clinical development including the manufacturing process for clinical-grade products. “We are excited to have another life sciences fund on board.” said Emil Pot, Allero Therapeutics’ CEO. He added: “This allows us to speed up key development milestones, which will pave the way for further accelerated (clinical) development of SOMIT products”.

Mariëtte van der Velden, Managing Partner of Curie Capital, said: “We are very excited to support Allero Therapeutics to develop SOMIT. The platform technology is based on a smart combination of product components known to be safe in humans. If the clinical trial of SOMIT in a first indication shows proof of tolerance induction, it would mean that the growing number of allergic patients can finally look forward to an easy to administer short-course treatment. In addition, it would provide a strong indication that a curative solution for specific autoimmune diseases can be developed“.

Professor Lars K. Poulsen, a leading clinical researcher and Key Opinion Leader in the area of Allergen Immunotherapy (AIT) of the Copenhagen University Hospital said: “There are still neither preventive nor curative treatments available for food allergies and autoimmune diseases, and the prospect of targeting the disease with SOMIT with its combination of specific antigens and modulation of the immune system is very promising and novel.”
