Cristal Therapeutics and Intravacc Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Novel Vaccine Platforms

Intravacc, a world leader in translational research and development of vaccines, and Cristal Therapeutics, a technology leader in enabling safer and more effective therapeutics, today announced a strategic collaboration to develop novel vaccine programs against human diseases with the initial candidate targeting COVID-19.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cristal Therapeutics and Intravacc will collaborate with an initial focus on generating a CriVac® vaccine candidate based on the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. In addition, Cristal Therapeutics will provide its powerful copper-free click chemistry reagent, CliCr®, for evaluation with Intravacc’s proprietary outer membrane vesicles (OMV) technology. OMV vaccines allow for the native conformation of immunity-stimulating antigens. After completion of the evaluation period Intravacc and Cristal will jointly explore next steps to further advance the program.

Axel Mescheder, M.D., CEO and CMO of Cristal, commented:

“Over the past year, it has become evident that vaccines play a crucial role in protecting us, our families and those at high risk for infectious diseases. We have put great effort in optimizing our unique CriVac® platform based on our CriPec® nanoparticles and CliCr® conjugation technology. Our CriVac® technology platform mimics features of a live virus, inducing immunity in a safe and efficient way, providing a solid foundation for the development of novel vaccine approaches. We look forward to partnering with Intravacc to develop novel therapeutic candidates for vaccinepreventable diseases.”

As part of this agreement, Intravacc will also provide access to its proprietary, detoxified LPS technology to enhance immune activation. All technologies represent innovative approaches to vaccine development enabling an efficient presentation of antigens to the immune system. Combining the technologies will further allow swift development of vaccine candidates against a broad range of human diseases. This is particularly driven by a scalable GMP manufacturing process.

Dr. Jan Groen, Intravacc’s CEO, said:

“Intravacc shares the belief that no one should be suffering from diseases that can be prevented by vaccines. We have a track record in translational vaccinology and an established infrastructure that enables the accelerated development of promising vaccine candidates such as Cristal’s CriVac® approach. Combining Cristal’s technologies with Intravacc’s proprietary LPS and OMV technologies holds great promise. We look forward to working closely with the Cristal team to advance the program through preclinical evaluation.”

Gelijk speelveld in Brexit-deal

BioGeneration Ventures BGV IV fund closes at €140 million

BioGeneration Ventures (BGV), a leading early-stage VC in European biopharma, announces the closing of BGV IV at €140 million ($170 million).  BGV IV was oversubscribed, with strong investor demand in the fund.

At the final close, LPs included the global pharma company, Eli Lilly and Company, and Novo Holdings (led by its venture arm, Novo Ventures), a world-leading life science investor. They joined other corporate and institutional investors including Bristol Myers Squibb, Schroder Adveq, Industriens Pension, KfW Capital and the European Investment Fund (with the support of the European Commission’s Investment Plan for Europe and of the Netherlands National Promotional Institution Invest-NL).

BGV is now one of the largest biotech investors in Europe dedicated to early-stage ventures and company creation, with over €250 million ($300 million) in assets under management.

The investment focus of the fourth fund is to seek innovations that have a truly differentiated scientific foundation, supported by convincing experimental data. These innovations must be compelling and stand out in the global scientific arena, and have the potential to have a substantial healthcare impact.

Edward van Wezel, BGV’s Managing Partner said: “Progressing early-stage projects from discovery to clinical proof-of-concept requires a breadth of experience that founding teams often do not have from the outset. This is where BGV’s team collective experience is a key differentiator, with its extensive network and experience spanninginvestment, life sciences, business development, and commercial operations. With this fund closing at €140 million, we are well positioned to support our portfolio companies with both increased financial capacity and our strong, expanding international network.”

The BGV IV fund will continue the successful investment strategy of previous funds and has already made four investments. BGV’s aim is to build new companies, around either single assets or technology platforms, with the goal of creating transformational new medicines and also creating significant returns for its LPs. BGV’s strategy is supported by its longstanding collaboration with Forbion, providing a platform across early- to late-stage companies.

Portfolio successes include Acerta Pharma, which was acquired by AstraZeneca for up to $7bn and whose lead product Calquence® is now approved and marketed in the US, and Staten Biotechnology, which signed a €430 million exclusive option deal with Novo Nordisk.

Other companies in the current BGV portfolio include NorthSea Therapeutics, Azafaros, Varmx, and Confo Therapeutics.

LSP and Philip Scheltens launch new, unique fund to fight dementia

LSP, the leading European life sciences investor, today announces the launch of the LSP Dementia Fund, a fund dedicated to fight neurodegenerative diseases. The fund will be managed by Professor Philip Scheltens, a world-renowned dementia scientist and thought leader.

Dementia is the greatest healthcare challenge of our time. A staggering 50 million patients suffer from dementia worldwide and predicted to triple to 150 million before the year 2050. The burden to our healthcare system is equally large; global costs are currently estimated to amount to over $800 billion – or 1.1% of global GDP – and will rise exponentially if no treatment is found. Yet, investments in R&D to find novel treatments are lagging behind.

The LSP Dementia Fund focuses on all stages of dementia drug and medtech development and as such is the first of its kind in the world. It offers the combination of LSP’s deep investment experience with Philip Scheltens’ impressive scientific acumen and extensive network of dementia experts and research institutions across the globe. The focus will be on finding novel treatments to battle the different neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, that cause dementia, as well as generating a strong financial return for investors. This makes the LSP Dementia Fund a true impact investment. In just a few months, LSP raised €50 million from strategic parties, financial institutions, and family offices. Given this significant appetite of investors, LSP believes the fund will ultimately reach at least €150 million.

Dr. René Kuijten, Managing Partner of LSP and founder of the LSP Dementia Fund, comments: “LSP is very honoured that Philip has joined our firm to lead this new and unique fund. In the past two decades, venture capital has proven to play an essential role in advancing biotech companies, but dementia opportunities remained largely unfunded. Together with Philip and his network, we now have a truly unique expertise in-house to identify and develop breakthrough ideas in the dementia field, ultimately leading to solutions for patients suffering from this terrible disease’’.

Prof. Philip Scheltens states: “I am excited to make this move in my career to realise treatment options for patients, building on and combining it with the work I was able to do at the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam. I am very honoured to be a part of the LSP team, the largest and most experienced life sciences investor in Europe’’.
