Dutch Biotech was buzzing in Boston

,

Orange was the color of innovation last week in Boston, as Dutch biotech made waves at BIO 2025. Over 20.000 innovators, investors, and industry leaders from across the globe gathered on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to work on a better future for people, animals, and the planet. And at the heart of it, we were proud to represent and connect with the vibrant Dutch biotech ecosystem together with colleagues from Health~Holland and the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA). Besides more than 100 Dutch delegates from 70 different biotech companies, this year we were joined by special guests from the Dutch Ministries of Economic Affairs, and Health, Welfare and Sport — a strong signal of the Netherlands’ commitment to global biotech leadership. Together we explored how The Netherlands can turn its biotech ambitions into bold and actionable leadership.

We kicked off the week with a buzzing Dutch welcome reception on Sunday evening at local beer brewery Trillium’s Fort Point taproom. During this special Boston edition of our ‘Hollandbio komt naar je toer’ event series, the Dutch delegation had the opportunity to catch up with familiar faces and share ambitions, setting the tone for the exciting week ahead.

From Monday to Thursday, a steady stream of curious visitors from all over the world stopped by the Dutch Pavilion to connect, energize and discover what makes the Netherlands a true biotech hotspot. The absolute highlight? Our Dutch Networking Reception on Tuesday evening, complete with the much-anticipated bike raffle. After an inspiring speech by Sipko Mülder, Management Team member of Pharmaceutical products and Medical technology at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, he and Annemiek Verkamman took the stage to announce the lucky winner: Pardis Saffari, Director of Economic Opportunity & Development at the City of Cambridge. Huge thanks to Loyens & Loeff for sponsoring the bike. We hope to spot it cruising through Boston next time we visit!

Meanwhile, the Dutch ministry representatives crisscrossed the city — by bike and by cab — to meet with key players in Boston’s biotech ecosystem. From strategy sessions at the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to deep dives at the Broad Institute and Cambridge Innovation Center, they gathered valuable insights on how to translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact. At the BIO itself, they met with members of the European Commission currently working on the EU Biotech Act for an additional European perspective. And Jeroen Heijs, Deputy Director of Innovation and Knowledge at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, participated in a panel discussion hosted by the European Innovation Council on how collaboration works in today’s biotech pipeline. We’re sure these countless meetings and inspiring activities help the policy makers to further shape and sharpen the Dutch biotech vision.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in Boston — your energy, ideas, and ambition made this another unforgettable BIO. We’re already looking forward to continuing the momentum at BIO Europe Vienna in November, BIO Europe Spring Lisbon in March or the BIO US San Diego in June next year. Until then, keep innovating!

EU Biotech Act call for evidence: four asks to make biotech thrive

, ,

Europe worked hard to become a leader in biotech. But while the rest of the world is taking the next step, we are blocking ourselves. Innovations get stuck in outdated rules and fragmented regulations, talent moves elsewhere, and other continents capitalize on European breakthroughs. If we don’t act now, Europe not only loses its frontrunner’s position, but also the societal and economic benefits that biotech can deliver: new medicines, smarter and cleaner products and a resilient economy.

While the US and China are competing over pole position, the EU aims to step up its game when it comes to biotech, too. The EU Biotech Act, to be launched next year, is one the instruments to reinstate Europe as a biotech powerhouse. At hollandbio, we welcome the EU Biotech Act as a long-awaited opportunity to restore Europe’s leadership in biotechnology and strengthen our biotech innovation ecosystem—from invention all the way to uptake.

In our overarching EU Biotech Act position paper, we state what we think is needed to ensure European biotech can thrive. Building on this, hollandbio submitted four key asks for the European Commission’s recent Call for Evidence, a consultation to gather input from stakeholders and experts to shape the EU Biotech Act legislative proposal.

To ensure biotech can thrive in Europe, we urge policymakers to focus on four key priorities:

  • Boosting biotech with an integrated approach;
  • Investing in progress driven by frontrunners;
  • Paving the way to market entry;
  • Removing barriers for implementation and uptake.

In these uncertain time, one thing is clear: the coming years are of crucial importance for the success of biotech. From curing incurable diseases to creating eco-friendly materials and ensuring food security, if we want to pass on a livable world to future generations, biotech is an essential part of the solution.

What would you act for?

Have you ever faced funding gaps, regulatory delays, or an uneven playing field? Then this is your moment to speak up! Share your vision for the future of European biotech by joining the conversation on LinkedIn by using #EUBiotechAct.

Marit Heblij voor even weer terug bij hollandbio

Konnichiwa!

Current state of biotech: hollandbio’s Wieteke at Johnson & Johnson’s event ‘Paths to the patient’

Last Tuesday at Johnson & Johnson’s event ‘Paths to the patient’, hollandbio’s Wieteke delivered a keynote about the current state of Dutch biotech. With a room full of frontrunners, the message was clear: it’s time to act (super) now. Wieteke outlined three key drivers of innovation: the urgent global challenges like unmet medical needs; the unprecedented potential of bioscience combined with computing and AI; and the drive of bold biotech entrepreneurs. These key drivers are not just shaping the future — they are transforming the way we feed and fuel the world.

Hollandbio’s Wieteke shared her perspective: “These are exciting times to be in biotech: as we are learning more and more about the ingenuity of nature, clever scientists and entrepreneurs are not just eager to publish their findings — they are determined to embark on the bold journey to turn this knowledge into life-saving solutions for patients”.

While these are challenging times for biotech companies,  we’ve never seen more unity, willingness, and urgency to do what is needed to let the Dutch and European biotech ecosystem flourish. With the ambitious national Dutch vision on biotechnology and the upcoming EU Biotech Act in mind, the moment is now to deliver on our promise to make life better with the power of biotech.

Kabinet gevallen, hollandbio biodieselt door

,

Hollandbio welcomes DELPHINIUM as a new member

Hollandbio connects, represents, and supports the Dutch life science sector. We are very proud that we already represent 260 companies: from start-ups, small and medium-sized companies to large companies, active in health, food, or the biobased economy. Today, we are happy to introduce DELPHINIUM as a new member! Based in Groningen, DELPHINIUM strengthens the Dutch biotech ecosystem with a specialized clinic focused on early-phase clinical drug development. Their 12-bed facility offers end-to-end Phase I services,  including clinical operations, medical writing, biostatistics, pharmacokinetics, and data management. As a Phase I clinic, DELPHINIUM conducts first-in-human studies, typically involving healthy volunteers. These trials are critical for assessing the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of new drug candidates before they move into later-stage trials with patients. With an experienced team and a dedicated facility, DELPHINIUM ensures that early-phase research is conducted safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory standards.

Furthermore, DELPHINIUM also supports companies within the Dutch biotech ecosystem with the variety in challenges they may encounter during their research, such as volunteer recruitment, regulatory affairs, or simply by offering their facilities, study staff and experience.

DELPHINIUM was founded with a clear mission: to empower small biotech companies through the most challenging early stages of development. By providing tailored solutions, DELPHINIUM ensures efficient and flexible approaches to early-phase clinical programs. They collaborate with preferably local vendors who understand the challenges faced by smaller biotechs and share their commitment to supporting them through this critical phase.

By joining Hollandbio, DELPHINIUM aims to connect with like-minded biotech innovators, raise awareness of their unique offering, and contribute to a thriving early-phase landscape in the Netherlands. Many companies remain unaware of the excellent, well-established clinic located on the UMCG grounds — something DELPHINIUM is determined to change.

Led by CEO Jitske Beukema, COO/CMO, Christine Voors-Pette MD, and CFO Agnes Boelens-van Nieff, DELPHINIUM brings decades of experience in clinical research. Their commitment to quality, flexibility, and personalized service makes them a valuable addition to the Dutch biotech landscape.

If you’re looking for a partner who truly understands the biotech mindset – practical, competitive, and committed – DELPHINIUM is ready to help you move forward.
