Personalized therapies are here. Can the system keep up?
Personalized therapies are opening the door to treatments that can be tailored to the individual patient. But while science is advancing rapidly, can regulatory and reimbursement systems built around traditional medicines keep up with this new generation of innovation? During her internship completed as the final step of her MSc in Biomedical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, hollandbio’s Violet explored exactly this question. Through interviews with stakeholders across industry, academia, and public organizations, she investigated how personalized therapies fit within today’s regulatory and reimbursement landscape. Her research reveals that while the scientific potential is clear, bringing these therapies to patients remains challenging. Stakeholders identified tensions around evidence requirements, reimbursement, affordability and collaboration, while also highlighting opportunities to better align innovation with patient access.
